I’m not sure whether to refer to this as “The” project or the “The” Project. But its the work of designer, typographer and illustrator Robb Oggle also known as Hound of the Lettering. Who finds old lettering of the word “The” which he isolates and digitizes.

A simple idea but its very interesting! It really highlights the diversity that existed in lettering in years gone by. Sure plenty of fonts that are common today have been around a long time, but in the past it was cheaper and easier to use unique hand lettering, and often it was more appropriate too.

Nowadays there is a huge variety of fonts available and there are plenty of people doing great unique lettering, but unfortunately the easiest options is using fonts that are very common. And its a bit of a shame really. But at least we can look to the past and be inspired by it, like this project shows.

Its a tumblr too! follow it here http://thetheproject.com/
